Where we come from tells us something about who we are and where we are going. Jesus told His disciples in John 4:38 “…Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.” As we ponder on all that God has done in and through this family those words ring true. God’s faithfulness has been clear from the very beginning of First Baptist Church of Rainelle. Humble beginnings, several floods, and the faithful prayers and service of God’s people has made this family what it is. Below is a small part of our story, but to really get to know us you have to come and partake in life with us. As you read our story we encourage you to pray as to whether you can see yourself as part of all that God is doing here.

Where We Have Been: Our History

Under a tree in “Slabtown” (Rainelle) what we know as First Baptist Church Rainelle was formed as East Rainelle Missionary Baptist Church on December 11, 1911 with Rev. W.H. Adams, Moderator and George W. Hughart as clerk.  The first members were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bryant and Irene Broadbrooks. Reverend John Bragg was called as Pastor to bring 2 sermons a month for $20 a year. Before the church building was erected in 1914, the church would meet in a grove along Main Street by lantern light. The Light that shone brightly in that grove has continued to light the way as our family tree has grown and has witnessed God’s faithfulness over these past 100+ years.
The name changed in 1937, the wooden building was replaced by brick in 1949, over 27 men have shepherded this flock, but the passion and Savior have remained the same: Telling the world of a gracious God and providing a place for all to come and worship Him.

Where We Are Going: The Next Chapter of First Baptist Church

As humbling as it is to reflect on our rich heritage, we are convinced that the legacy that precedes us is just the beginning of what God wants to do through His people in the town of Rainelle and the world. As a family of God we look forward to all that God has planned for this next chapter at FBC Rainelle. Pastor Keith Cook began shepherding here in 2019, and is eager to seek God’s will for His people in Rainelle and Western Greenbrier County.
We are eager to grow in faithfulness toward God and each other. With a God like ours there is simply no limit to what can be. The story of First Baptist has never been and never will be a “one man show”, this is a family, and together we will depend on Christ for His direction and clarity as we grow as a body.
